Locarno Agreement Concerning the International Classification for Industrial Designs was adopted on Oct. 8, 1968 by a diplomatic conference in Locarno (Switzerland), to which were invited all the member countries of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (hereinafter “the Locarno Agreement,” the Locarno Classification).
Locarno Classification consists of:
(i) a list of classes and subclasses;
(ii) an alphabetical list of items, in which both designs together with an indication of the corresponding classes and subclasses;
(iii) explanatory notes.
Locarno Agreement requires that the industrial property office of each contrasting countries “included in the official documents for the deposit or registration of the [industrial] samples and, if they are officially published, the publication number of classes of the Locarno Classification, which include the [industrial] samples” (Article 2 (3). Recommendations of the Committee of Experts relating to how the classes and subclasses must be indicated on the above mentioned documents and publications.
On October 1, 1998 the following 35 countries have participated in the Locarno Agreement: Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Democratic Republic of Korea, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Guinea, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Malawi, Netherlands, Norway, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Yugoslavia.
