Creative Unions are ready to work for IP strategy development

On March 4, 2010 the meeting of the WIPO delegation and Kyrgyzpate officials took place with representatives of the creative unions’ representatives to change by information and suggestions for development of the National Strategy in the field of intellectual property.

The representatives of the Union of Writers, Composers, Painters, Cinematographers, People’s Craftsmen and the Village Development Fund participated in this event.

Participants were welcomed by Mr. Turuspek Koenaliev, Director Advisor of Kyrgyzpatent and Mr. Michal Svantner, Director, Division for Certain Countries in Europe and Asia, head of the WIPO delegation.

The following current issues were discussed during the meeting: royalty payment; problems of authors’ works illegal distribution; traditional knowledge protection; insufficient public awareness on intellectual property. The topic issue of domestic authors’ rights protection was discussed, whose works sometimes are publishing abroad without coordination with right holders.

After views and valuable suggestions changing, members of the meeting came to a conclusion on necessity of regular meetings and consultations for considering problems in the field of copyright and related rights protection as well as for making cooperative offer, which will be put in future framework of strategy.

The WIPO experts noted that they have received a lot of new and useful information about the situation of creative communities in Kyrgyzstan and ways of problem solution concerned to copyright and traditional knowledge protection. According to Director Advisor and specialists of Kyrgyzpatent the system creation of collective management of copyright would be the one improving way. The meeting organizers noted, that creators of literature and art works should take up more active position at own works protection against plagiary and piracy.
