The ICANN organization responsible for regulation of site names system has approved the introduction of non-Latin domain names. As the ICANN experts note, the soon to come non-Latin domains will be the most significant change in the Global network from the moment of its creation 40 years ago.
The State Intellectual Property Service has submitted a preliminary request to ICANN for delegation of the Cyrillic ccTLD domain in December, 2009.
The preliminary options are “кг”, “кр”, “кыр” (example “кг”, example “кр” or “example “кыр”). One of the conditions set by ICANN on IDN is that the proposed IDN shall not be similar to already existing Latin domain. For example, “кг” is very similar to “кr” (Republic of Korea), whereas а “кр” is similar to “kp” (People’s Republic of China). Thus, there is a possibility that ICANN can refuse to register “кр” or ”кг”.
In this regard, Kyrgyzpatent is conducting a survey on possible options of Cyrillic ccTLD for Kyrgyzstan.
In order to obtain as much possible opinions as to collect the maximum of options for the name of national domain, the survey is conducted through various websites, youth forums. In addition, the announcement on the survey was posted on a popular forum “Diesel”. Everyone who wishes to contribute is invited to participate in the process. You can leave your comments on the Diesel Forum or send to an e-mail:
Registration of the Cyrillic domains has a number of advantages for the users, as they are very convenient for the Russian speaking users of the network. Moreover, it will allow to easily reflect specific letters of the Kyrgyz Language (ө,ң,ү), that do not have analogs in the Latin alphabet.
Proposals are accepted until 15th of February, 2010
Note: From now on, people who do not possess knowledge of English language will get an access to internet in their native language. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), has launched the process of delegation of ccTLD internationalized domains (IDN — Internationalized Domain Names)
IDNs are the domain names which include symbols differing form the English alphabet Peter Dengate Thrush, the Head of ICANN has noted that the ‘IDN program will cover around one hundred thousand symbols, providing access to billions of potential internet uses all over the world”.
Rod Beckstrom, the ICANN President: «IDN will make the Internet more global and accessible for all”.
“It is the first-rate technical modification of the Internet addressing system in through many years” said Tina Dam, the director on domain names, ICANN.
